I teach two sisters (6 years old and 8 years old) a weekly “sibling” lesson. They immediately fell in love with “The Cactus Song” when I first introduced them to the song and accompaniment track. It was the perfect song to review the quarter note, quarter, half, and whole rests, and eighth note rhythms. Since the accompaniment track plays through the song three times, it allowed each singer to sing through the song as a solo and then join together as a duet for the final sing through. The song has several rests, so it was a challenge for the singers to master the timing of the song and reinforced the concept that silences in music are just as important as the sounds.
