About Our Guest:
Mezzo-soprano, Shannon Coates holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, a Masters of Vocal Performance Specialising in Voice Pedagogy, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance Specialising in Voice Pedagogy all from the University of Toronto. She is lauded for her academic research concerning voice pedagogy, especially on the topic of inter-disciplinary communication concerning breathing for singing.
Shannon maintains active voice studios in Holland Landing and in Toronto, where she works with singers of all ages in a wide range of styles. Students from her home studio regularly achieve First Class Honours standing at Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) and Conservatory of Canada Examinations, win trophies and scholarships at local and provincial competitions, and successfully audition for Arts Designated High Schools, local music theatre companies, and prestigious choirs. Students at Shannon’s Toronto studio are either preparing for careers in music theatre or opera performance, or in music education, or are serious avocational singers who participate in Toronto’s finest choirs.
A passionate educator, Shannon instructs undergraduate voice pedagogy at the University of Toronto and at Wilfrid Laurier University (2014/2015), and has been a Part-Time Instructor of Applied Voice at Tyndale University. Shannon is the incoming President of NATS Ontario, a founding member of the Student Chapter of NATS at the University of Toronto, and has been a consulting member of the Student Chapter of NATS at Wilfrid Laurier University. In demand as a master class technician, and as an adjudicator, Shannon, in addition to adjudicating for festivals across Canada, has adjudicated for both the Ontario and Newfoundland Provincial Music Festivals, and for the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association (ORMTA) Provincial Competition. Shannon holds the designation of Registered Music Teacher with ORMTA and is certified as an Advanced Voice Specialist with the RCM.
